Though those cells have done wonders for science, Henrietta-whose legacy involves the birth of bioethics and the grim history of experimentation on African-Americans-is all but forgotten. But her cells are still among the most widely used in labs worldwide-bought and sold by the billions. Today, nearly 60 years after Henrietta's death, her body lies in an unmarked grave in Clover, Virginia. One scientist estimates that if you could pile all the HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they'd weigh more than 50 million metric tons-the equivalent of at least 100 Empire State Buildings. There's no way of knowing exactly how many of Henrietta's cells are alive today. Since 2001 alone, five Nobel Prizes have been awarded for research involving HeLa cells. They became the first immortal human cell line ever grown in culture and one of the most important tools in medicine: Research on HeLa was vital to the development of the polio vaccine, as well as drugs for treating herpes, leukemia, influenza, hemophilia, and Parkinson's disease it helped uncover the secrets of cancer and the effects of the atom bomb, and led to important advances like cloning, in vitro fertilization, and gene mapping. A scientist put that sample into a test tube, and, though Henrietta died eight months later, her cells-known worldwide as HeLa-are still alive today. He took a small tissue sample without her knowledge or consent. In 1951, at the age of 30, Henrietta Lacks, the descendant of freed slaves, was diagnosed with cervical cancer-a strangely aggressive type, unlike any her doctor had ever seen. In an excerpt from her book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Rebecca Skloot tells her story. But today, Henrietta is all but forgotten. Those cells led to breakthroughs in everything from Parkinson's to polio. When Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cancer in 1951, doctors took her cells and grew them in test tubes.

EasyHDR has a list of presets but no preview for the list to see a sample of the results. After a few minutes of playing around with the alignment tool again I was able to get EasyHDR to align the image correctly.Īfter getting the image aligned I proceeded to tone map the image. So I ended up saving the file to take a look at it in Photoshop… and sure enough I was right, it wasn’t aligned properly. Trying to zoom in on the preview window is almost pointless as it’s slower than I have patients for. (Anytime I don’t have to click a button to get somewhere I’m suppose to be, I like!) Once I get to the tone mapping menu I noticed that the alignment of my image is off in the preview area. Of course this could be me and my lack of knowledge about this particular HDR program, but I promise you I did try to find an easier way.Īfter clicking the generate HDR button, I am taken to the tone mapping window automatically, which I like. Now in my opinion that’s very inconvenient. Something else frustrating about the program is that I have to remove my current exposure just to do a new set of exposures. I’m guessing easyHDR assumes I’ll be doing something else other than tone mapping my photo. I also didn’t like that I have to click another button after I align my photo to get to the tone mapping window. I’ll be honest, the easyHDR alignment window is a little awkward, but the other two HDR programs, Artizen HDR and DynamicPhoto HDR, were the same way. The reason I find easyHDR’s alignment window frustrating is the lack of intuitive controls, even the manual aligment option was hard to understand. Once the exposures have been loaded a window will automatically pop-up allowing you to align the images. This is easily done by going to the number one tab and clicking the open button. But it’s not without fault, I still feel that EasyHDR could simplify it’s process to make tone mapping and creating HDR images easier.ĮasyHDR has a straight forward user interface, to proceed making an HDR image you’ll need to load your exposures. What makes it great is like the name implies, it’s easy. So far it’s my favorite out of the three high dynamic range programs that I’ve tested. Photomatix is the only package that captured the details on the daylight lit moon down to the nightime shadows under the bridge.Posted Febru– easyHDR is the third HDR software on the list to be reviewed by Captain Kimo. It also has a batch capability which is used a lot for large numbers of HDR sequences taken out in the noon day sun! The 32 bit exr files are saved for post processing the really interesting images. It has a user assisted ghost removal tool than is handy and used frequently. The fourth method is Exposure Fusion used predominantly for commercial real estate work. Tone Compressor produces deep rich colors and a more natural looking images. Contast Optimizer produces very natural looking HDR images. The detail Enhancer method is the one that most people associate with HDR. It has four different tone mapping methods used to produce different looks. While some use EasyHDR and Aurora for the majority of work, they use Photomatix for really tough images and commercial real estate work. Photomatix is the gorilla in the HDR space all others are compared to. It is one of the oldest dedicated HDR softwares. Next count how many cubes are there in the next layer. For example, if you are starting with mm and you know a and h in mm, your calculations will result with V in mm 3.īelow are the standard formulas for volume. To calculate the volume of rectangular prism or cuboid, count the number of small cubes in one layer. The units are in place to give an indication of the order of the results such as ft, ft 2 or ft 3. Units: Note that units are shown for convenience but do not affect the calculations. Online calculator to calculate the volume of geometric solids including a capsule, cone, frustum, cube, cylinder, hemisphere, pyramid, rectangular prism, sphere and spherical cap. find the height of a room when the volume and the floor area are known.Rectangular Prism Calculator Calculator Use Students must be able to figure the volume of a rectangular prism when given the lengths of the sides, the number of unit cubes in the area of the base. A 4 x 8 x 2 rectangular prism has a surface area of 112 square units from these calculations. In the second problem we calculate the volume of a figure that consists of two rectangular prisms (maybe a building), in cubic feet.Īnd the last problem is a tad more challenging. I believe that there might be a misunderstanding. What is the volume of the prism Compare your formula with that of another pair of classmates. First we simply find the volume of a rectangular prism when given its three dimensions. This rectangular prism is made from 1-cm cubes. The result you've got is the volume of your solid. Multiply together the three values from Step 1. In the second part, we look at a variety of problems relating to the volume of a rectangular prism. We should recall that the space occupied by a three-dimensional object is called the volume of that object. To find the volume of a rectangular prism, you need to: Determine the lengths of the sides: width, length, height. This then leads us to the familiar formula for the volume of a rectangular prism: simply multiply the three dimensions (width, depth, height, or could also be called length, width, height). Plug in the measures of the length, height and width expressed as decimals in the formula Vlwh and find the volume of each rectangular prism in this set of. I show using actual blocks that we can find the total volume by first figuring out how many blocks are in the bottom row, and then multiplying that by the height, or how many layers of blocks there are. Then we look at the volume of a rectangular prism (box in common language). If they are 1 cm each, we have a one cubic centimeter, and so on. If the edges those cubes are 1 inch each, we have one cubic inch. Volume (how much space something takes) is measured in CUBIC units - which are simply little cubes. Teaching volume of rectangular prisms typically begins in 5th grade, then extends in 6th to prisms with fractional edge lengths. What are some possible dimensions for a rectangular prism with a volume close to: a)150cm b)326cm c)52cm. Check your answers by unhiding the Formula and Volume above. Create 5 different rectangular prisms and find their volume. All its angles are right angles and opposite faces are. Cubic units and volume of rectangular prism This can be used to practice finding the volume of a great number of prisms. A rectangular prism is a 3-dimensional object with six rectangular faces. It makes Notational Velocity ideal for getting your ideas down quickly when you are in the middle of doing something else and it makes it really easy to find them when you need to. Bring some of the awesome features from apps like Notational Velocity, nvalt, Bear, FSNotes, Obsidian to VS Code, where you also have (1) Vim key bindings and (2) excellent extensibility. Automatically create notes from new inline wiki-links. That way you can launch the program without using a mouse or trackpad and begin taking notes immediately. Use wiki-links, backlinks, tags and bibtex-citations for fast-navigation of markdown notes. For best results it should be used with an application launcher like Launchbar or Quicksilver or a hotkey program like Keyboard Maestro. The program is optimised for speed and designed so you need never take your hands of the keyboard which is pretty much always faster than pointing and clicking with a mouse. You can tag notes with keywords for quick searching. You can export your notes in a number of very different formats, such as plain text, RTF, HTML, and Word. Your notes can be stored in an encrypted format. Notational Velocity constantly auto-saves your work so you don’t have to remember to push the save button. That’s it and I have probably made it sound a lot more complicated than it is. If you hit enter, it will turn what you have typed in the search box into the title for your new note, and move your focus down into the note body section where you can type the rest of your note. What you type will bring up a list of the notes you have already written containing what you’ve typed. You just open it and start typing, rather like you would type in the search box in Google or Spotlight in OSX. It is intended to allow you to make and track notes very, very quickly. Other features include database encryption, basic text formatting, tags and spellcheck. It allows users to create notes using solely a computer keyboard and search them using incremental find. Notational Velocity is a very simple-looking but surprisingly sophisticated little program for the Mac. Notational Velocity is a computer program for Mac OS X used for notetaking. Both trap-and-kill and trap-and-remove result in the "vacuum effect" - when new, unaltered, and unvaccinated cats move into the emptied area and breed, with no caretaker to monitor the cats over the long term.Ī TNR "mass trapping" potentially involves neutering all of the cats during one trapping project. TNR is effective and humane, unlike traditional trap-and-kill or trap-and-remove. TNR performed consistently in a neighborhood has the potential to reduce intake at the city's shelters and, consequently, to reduce euthanasia rates. Whenever possible, young kittens and friendly cats are taken in for adoption. Here their caretakers provide them with food, shelter and, when needed, medical care. With TNR, cats are trapped, spayed (females) or neutered (males), vaccinated against rabies, surgically and painlessly ear-tipped on the left ear for identification, and returned to their territory. TNR is the only humane and proven-effective method to control and eventually reduce the stray and feral cat overpopulation crisis. Collectively, these stray and feral cats are generally referred to as "community cats."Īs early as the 1970s, a few concerned individuals in New York City began implementing TNR for community cats. Born outdoors and having lived with little or no human contact, they are wary of people and have learned to survive in whatever place they call home - whether it's someone's backyard, an industrial park, or any number of other outdoor locations. Feral cats are the offspring of lost or abandoned pet cats. But the vast majority of the free-roaming cats in New York City are "feral" - not socialized to humans. Some of the cats are strays who have become lost or were abandoned. Tens of thousands of free-roaming cats live in the backyards, alleyways, vacant lots, and other outdoor spaces of New York City. Between 20, the NYC Feral Cat Initiative (NYCFCI) of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals (the Mayor's Alliance) was a driving force leading the charge in New York City to humanely reduce their numbers through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). New York City has a long history of working to manage the stray and feral community cat overpopulation problem.
They are definitely worth keeping an eye on if you live in the EU, as shipping from the USA for things like notebooks often doubles the price. Thank you to Pocket Notebooks for sending me this sample. It’s worth a look if you want a notebook primarily for lists but otherwise you may find it too restrictive. The Word Notebook is a good little pocket book with reasonable paper and an interesting and potentially useful system for making lists. It’s easy enough to ignore the bullets for a page or two should you wish to stray from the path occasionally. If that’s what you want then obviously this is perfect. The inside front cover describes the Word system.įor this is a notebook that comes with a bullet-list based system. The inside back cover has a list of suggestions for making better notes. Every notebook is designed and made in the USA. The cover is stiff cardboard and pretty sturdy. Notebooks is an ode to lifes more covert affairs and secretive matters. It holds up well with gel ink pens, fibre-tipped pens and ballpoints, with little show-through. Careful choice of ink and nib will work but if you really want to use fountain pens for everything this probably isn’t the notebook for you (rather like Field Notes). The 90gsm paper isn’t particularly fountain pen friendly. Pocket Notebooks is a new company selling a good range of notebooks that also offers a subscription based notebook service in the UK. Travelers can use the GP-1A GPS receiver, which attaches via the hot shoe and connects to the accessory port (to which you also plug in wired remotes). Like the D750 itself, the grip is weather-sealed. The grip can hold another EN-EL15 or six AA batteries (with included adapter) and also has additional controls for portrait shooting. The GP-1A GPS receiver plugs into the camera's accessory terminal.Īside from lenses and external flashes, one of the most popular D750 accessories will be its pricey MB-D16 grip. The optional MB-D16 grip can hold an additional EN-EL15 or six AA batteries. In the rest of Europe it's priced at €2149 for the body and £2699 with the 24-85mm F3.5-4.5G lens. As such, we're not expecting the D750 to come close to the D810 for critical resolution, but on the plus side, it produces smaller files, and is a faster camera as a result. While Nikon is calling it 'newly developed', the D750's 24MP sensor is likely to be based on the sensor found in the D610, and includes an AA filter - bucking the recent Nikon trend. It's a shame that the D750 does not feature the Split Screen Display Zoom feature of the D810 and some people will miss 1/8000 minimum shutter duration but aside from these omissions, arguably the only other thing of any significance that the D810 offers which the D750 doesn't is those extra 12 million pixels. The D750 also offers Auto ISO control in manual exposure video shooting, retaining exposure compensation. In this instance, that means powered aperture control, the new 'Flat' picture control mode and the addition of zebra overexposure warnings (though no focus peaking yet). The D750 also inherits the same video specification as the D810, which itself incorporated the refinements that Nikon has been adding with each successive DSLR release. The D750 offers faster continuous shooting than the D810 (6.5fps), an 'improved' version of the D810's 51-point AF system (more on that later), a 91,000-pixel RGB metering sensor, a now tilt-able 3.2" RGBW LCD screen (which is otherwise the same), and the same OLED viewfinder display. What's new and cool: Latest generation AF system, tilting 3.2" LCD, 6.5 fps shooting, advanced video functions Impressively though - with the exception of its 24 megapixel sensor - the D750's build quality, ergonomics and feature set have much more in common with the more expensive of the two. Sitting between the more affordable D610 and the pro-grade, high-resolution D810, the D750 borrows elements from both cameras. The D750 is Nikon's third full-frame DSLR this year, and for a lot of our readers, it might be the most significant. |
